DEW CRAFTS
Bangladesh

DEW (Development Wheel) is a non-governmental organization (NGO), with its head office in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. Further offices are in Mymensingh, Netrokona, Jamalpur, Savar and Jessore. As a member of the Word Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), DEW operates according to the ten principles of fair trade and cooperates with about 12 small artisanal companies.

To weave baskets is a traditional craft in Bangladesh, for which mainly natural materials are used. The artisans from DEW work in central working places close to their homes under fair working conditions and scheduled breaks. Women and men earn the same wage. Also, women have the opportunity to work from home, so that they can care for their children.

DEW organises the export of the high-quality products. Through selling the baskets the artisans are able to sustainably improve their life standards. Therefore, DEW also creates campaigns to gain a wider awareness for gender equality in the society as well as to promote techniques for sustainable and small permaculture and actions against climate change.
