To produce these kilims our weavers use long and robust winter wool yarns of the local sheep and color them with natural dyes. The carpets they produce are called “Tribal Conflict Carpets” because the artisans illustrate their personal interpretations of the relationships between the tribes, families and individuals who live in the Biainili Lands. Strong coloured borders and sharp shapes indicate recent tribal conflicts between the families, while soft transitions between colours and shapes indicate blood ties between neighbouring groups with similar interests. The producers of our carpets live in Van in Eastern Anatolia and are all young women who have little chance of creating an income in a difficult job market.
