This cushion cover has been hand-stitched and block-printed by women such as Rubya Begum who can make a living from her handicraft since she started working for the Ayesha Abed Foundation. The embroidery technique they use to make the beautiful pattern is called Kantha. Kantha originates from the way in which Bengali housewives mended old clothes by taking out a strand of thread from the border of their saris and making simple designs with it. Even today this craft is an important artistic meaning of self-expression for both urban and rural women in Bangladesh.
